Make a cloze worksheet in three steps
Paste a passage, click the words you want to remove, then export. The generator handles the layout, the blanks, the scrambled word bank and an optional answer key, so you are not rebuilding a worksheet in Word every week.
Everything runs in the browser. Your text and your students’ material stay on your device.
How it works
- Paste the passage. A paragraph, an article extract, a transcript or a set of instructions.
- Click the words to blank. Click a word to turn it into a gap and click again to undo. Use the counter to keep the exercise at the right difficulty.
- Set up the worksheet. Add a title and instructions, choose whether to include a word bank, and decide whether to shuffle it.
- Export. Download a PDF, a Word document, or print directly.
Choosing good words to blank
A cloze exercise works when the missing word can be worked out from context. A few rules of thumb:
- Blank content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives and technical vocabulary.
- Leave function words such as the, of and and in place. Removing them makes the sentence unreadable rather than challenging.
- Space blanks out. One blank every ten to fifteen words keeps the passage readable.
- For beginners, blank fewer words and include the word bank. For advanced learners, remove the bank.
What the worksheet includes
- A title and a line of instructions.
- The passage with your chosen words replaced by blanks.
- An optional word bank at the bottom, shuffled so it does not reveal the order.
- An optional answer key on its own page.
- A clean A4 layout with room to write.
Using the files
The PDF is ready to print or share. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice, so you can change the title, add a name and date line, or adjust the instructions before printing. The print button uses your browser’s print dialog, which also lets you save as PDF.
If you need to count the words or check the reading level, Word Counter gives you the figures. To clean text copied from a PDF before pasting it here, use Text Cleaner.
Frequently asked
What is a cloze exercise?
A cloze exercise is a passage with selected words removed. The learner reads the surrounding text and works out which word belongs in each gap. Teachers use it for vocabulary, comprehension and grammar practice.
How do I choose the words to blank out?
Paste your passage, then click any word in the passage panel. Click it again to remove the blank. The counter shows how many blanks you have.
Can I include a word bank?
Yes. Turn the word bank on and the selected words appear at the end of the worksheet in a scrambled order. You can also leave the bank off if you want a harder exercise.
Can I shuffle the word bank?
Yes. Shuffle is on by default, so the bank does not give away the order of the answers.
Is there an answer key?
You can add one. It prints on a separate page with the answers in passage order.
What formats can I download?
A print-ready PDF, a Microsoft Word document you can edit, or a direct print from your browser. All three use the same layout.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The passage and the worksheet are built in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
