Slug Generator

Turn a headline into a clean, readable URL slug.

A clean URL in one step

A slug is the readable part of a URL: the merge-pdf in flowaitools.com/tools/merge-pdf. Good slugs are short, lowercase and use hyphens. Bad slugs contain dates, ids, capital letters and encoded characters.

Paste your headline and the tool produces a slug that is ready to use.

How to generate a slug

  1. Paste your title.
  2. Choose a separator, hyphen is the default.
  3. Decide whether to remove common stop words.
  4. Copy the result.

What makes a good slug

  • Short. Three to six words is ideal.
  • Descriptive. It should say what the page is about without the date.
  • Stable. Changing a slug later breaks links. Choose once and keep it.
  • Lowercase. Mixed case creates duplicate URLs on some servers.
  • No stop words unless they help readability.

Common mistakes

Adding the date. best-laptops-2026 dates the page the moment the year changes. Keep dates out of evergreen content.

Keyword stuffing. best-cheap-laptops-buy-laptops-online reads like spam. One clear phrase is enough.

Changing it after launch. If you must change a slug, redirect the old URL with a 301. Otherwise every existing link and ranking is lost.

Need the surrounding metadata too? Meta Tag Generator builds the title and description tags. Robots.txt Generator controls how crawlers treat the page.

Questions

Frequently asked

Should a slug use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, while underscores join words together. Use hyphens for every URL.

Should I remove stop words?

Only if the slug stays readable. Removing a, an, the, of and and is common, but a slug like how-to-make-bread reads better with the small words than make-bread-how.

What about non English characters?

The tool transliterates accents, so café becomes cafe. Characters that cannot be transliterated are removed rather than percent encoded.

Is there a length limit?

Keep slugs under about 60 characters. Search results truncate long URLs and long slugs are harder to share.
